Repair your Canon EFS17-85mm Lens

In this post, I am going to guide you in the repair of a Canon EFS 17-85mm lens, which has a fairly common breakdown due to use.

The fault is an error message on the camera display which indicates "error 01" or "error 99" which tells us that there is a communication failure between the camera and the lens.

Find out what is faulty

The first thing to do is find out which element is faulty, the camera, or the lens. It is very simple, we put another objective in the camera if the error is not reproduced, it means that the fault is in our objective, you put your objective in another camera and if the error is reproduced…. there you have the fault located.

Repair of our canon lens step by step

Well, we get down to work, the main thing is to have a fairly large place to work and we arm ourselves with patience.

I advise you to bring forth pictures of each screw and disassembled piece as a guide, then know again mount the lens.

Step 1:

canon target

Remove the 4 screws from the bayonet then on the side of the bayonet there are two micro-screws that fix the part where the lens contacts are. canon targeting these screws have been removed, we very carefully lift the bayonet from the opposite side of the contacts and proceed to remove the plastic piece, which goes with some plastic clips. canon target

Once the bayonet is removed, we find the upper plastic piece that covers the electronic plate of the objectives, we must lift it very carefully since it has a flex cable that we must disconnect.

Step 2:canon target

When we remove this cable, we will find the electronic board with 5 more connectors that we must disconnect the flex cables, some of them are simply disconnected by pulling the cable, but there are others such as those seen in the upper left part of the photo that must be lifted with small pliers the brown tab to release the cable. And on the left side of the photo another wider connector which has at its ends some small clips that by pulling them release the connector. Once all the connectors are released, we will be as in the photo.

Then remove the silver screw that fixes the electronic plate to the target and we will have the free plate to continue working with the target until we reach the part that we must change.

Step 3:

Remove the silver screws from the plastic part, it is exactly 8 screws, 5 of them remove the upper plastic part, and the remaining 3 release the lower part.

Step 4:

Remove the rubber ring. Underneath there are 3 black screws with a gold spacer each. We remove them and also note that there is a black sticker on the housing that we have to remove in order to discover a comb-shaped piece. This piece also has a silver screw. We remove it and separate the piece in the form of a comb. Now we can remove this part of the lens housing.

How To Remove Fungus From Camera Lens

Remove the 3 silver screws from the black cylinder. Then the 9 silver micro-screws and we remove the white plastic pieces that protect the micro-screws. This frees us the internal parts to reach the flex cable that we must change.

We must pay special attention to this black metal piece that is fixed by 2 black screws as shown in the photo. Until we remove them we will not be able to access the internal parts of the lens.

Step 6:

canon target removes the cylindrical piece and we have access to the diaphragm piece. We remove the screw that fixes the flex cable to the edge of the cylinder and we have already released the part that we must replace.

Step 7:

We remove the screw that fixes the metal plate to the flex cable and we can very carefully desolder and solder the replacement.

We can also find this complete replacement. So we can avoid soldering the flex cable with the following reference: yg2-2169-010 for about € 20.

It only remains to mount the lens in reverse order.

Once again we have managed to save a few € urillos and have our canon objective like new.
